What was Barnstorming? Barnstorming was a thrilling form of aerial entertainment that became wildly popular in the 1920s, during the so-called Golden Age of Aviation. After World War I, surplus military biplanes were inexpensive and plentiful, and many former military pilots, eager to keep flying, took to the skies in these planes to perform daring stunts for the public.
Why was it called barnstorming? While stories of pilots flying through the openings of barns likely happened somewhere, the truth is Pilots would “storm” into town like traveling performers, sometimes quite literally using barns and fields for makeshift runways.
