The name behind the soap.
'Six One Seven' shave soap is named after the Royal Air Force 617 Squadron who are more famously known as 'The Dambusters'. The members of the Squadron included British, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian aircrew.
On the night of 16-17 May 1943, 617 Squadron embarked on an audacious bombing raid to destroy three dams in the Ruhr valley, the industrial heartland of Germany. The mission was codenamed Operation 'Chastise'.
The label depicts a single Lancaster bomber on its bombing run on one of the Ruhr Valley Dams. Visible underneath the aircraft is the famous 'bouncing bomb' designed especially for the raid by Barnes Wallis.
About Squadron Soap:
"I was a kid that grew up in a military family. Mum, Dad, Uncle, Aunties, they were all serving in the Royal Australian Air Force, others in my extended family were serving in the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army. A Grandfather in the Army during WW2, distant relatives in WW1, and further back some during the Boer War.
No surprise I joined the Air Force myself when I was old enough, serving for almost 2 decades.
In my final few years in the Air Force I became interested in wet-shaving along with a few work colleagues. We shared various soaps, brushes and embraced all that was 'old' about the familiar morning routine of shaving. Someone said 'you should have a go at making your own shaving soap' - and that's where it began, a bit over a year of testing, tweaking and fine tuning my recipe to get where it is here today.
The name 'Squadron Soap', is a nod to that part of my life, and the artwork and names are reminiscent of the British 'Commando' Comics I read as a kid. I was most interested in WW2, and that is the theme of our soap range.
All our soaps are made by hand, manufactured in small batches of no more than 7 tubs at a time. Sure we could make larger batches, but we like to keep it small so we can keep a close eye on everything. I just wanted to produce a good soap, at an affordable price, with 'old school' ingredients like Tallow and Lanolin.
Squadron Soap is based in the rural outskirts of the Barossa Valley in South Australia."
